Founded in 1997 by Jeff Barringer, a computer network engineer and long time kingsnake hobbyist and breeder, the site was one of the first community and social media web sites to serve the reptile community, and was based on his popular Alterna Page, a web site focused on the natural history of the grey-banded kingsnake launched in 1994 and recognized as one of the first reptile web sites on the internet.

Since its inception kingsnake.com has been considered an industry leader and innovator, over time pioneering many new technologies for the reptile and amphibian community. It is recognized by many as one of the major players that helped transition and transform the reptile vertical of the pet industry over the last 20 years.
