- Key DifferentiatorAbout Sierra Journal Sierra Journal is an online magazine, blog and Web community born of a passion for mountain climbing, backcountry skiing and wilderness travel in the Sierra Nevada. Sierra Journal’s mission is to provide entertainment, inspiration and information in the form of trip reports, news and gear reviews focusing on climbing, backpacking and skiing (backcountry or otherwise). The site has a focus on the Sierra Nevada but also covers other areas of the country (and the world) including the Rockies, Cascades, Andes and beyond. Contributors Matthew DiPietro PicMatthew DiPietro is the founder and editor of Sierra Journal. He lives in San Francisco, works in digital media and spends every single free moment in the mountains or on his surboard. He’s an avid alpine climber, backcountry skier, backpacker and is a ski patroller at Squaw Valley. He has numerous technical ascents and descents under his belt in the Cascades, Rockies and Andes, but there is a special place in his heart for Tahoe and the Eastern Sierra. He’s AIARE Avalanche Level II certified. He is of the opinion that there is no more comfortable place to sleep than the back of his truck. More about Matt here. bio_picRich Meyer has over a dozen years of experience guiding clients to mountain peaks around the world. His specialties include Skiing, Climbing and Avalanche Education. Rich pens the “Guide’s Corner” column, a regular series of articles full of Tips, Tricks, Trip Reports, Gear Reviews, and Mountaineering Ramblings – hard-earned knowledge gleaned from his days and nights guiding clients up and down mountains. You can learn more about Rich at his website, and read all of his SJ articles here. 2Emilie Cortes, CFA, CAIA left the finance and investment world to run an all women’s adventure company called Call of the Wild Adventures, Inc. She left the corporate world to follow her two passions: 1) all sorts of climbing domestic and abroad – snow, glacier, rock, ice, and 2) empowering people, particularly women, through positive experiences in the outdoors. Emilie has served as a Chair and Treasurer of the Sierra Club Peak Climbing Section, Steering Committee member and Co-Leader in the Sierra Club Snowcamping section, a Board member of the National Association of Women MBAs, and a member of the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit. She also works for GirlVentures (a non-profit creating outdoor leadership opportunities for adolescent girls) on their Transitions Course, a climbing adventure. Emilie now lives in Bend, OR and splits her time between Oregon and California speaking and guiding. Read all of Emilie’s articles here.
