The American Spectator was founded in 1924 by George Nathan and Truman Newberry over a cheap domestic ale in McSorley's Old Ale House. In 1967 the Saturday Evening Club took it over, rechristening it The Alternative: An American Spectator; but by November 1977 the word "alternative" had acquired such an esoteric fragrance that in order to discourage unsolicited manuscripts from florists, beauticians, and other creative types the Club reverted to the magazine's original name. Published remarkably without regard to gender, lifestyle, race, color, creed, physical handicap, or national origin.

Great writing, inconvenient App

A download of an issue can stall forever without reason. Even after one issue has downloaded smoothly, the next issue is very likely to sit there with the circle spinning. Update: all the problems will be fixed in the app update, they say, but the delivery date coincides with a sensible budget from Obama........................................(this space not large enough to depict development time)........... Here's the thing: great writing and wry graphics are moot if you can't get them. In order to clear out unspecified digital crud, the user must "delete issue data" and restart the app. Then log in again to iTunes or Spectator to get the issues (because it forgets about you as well as the issues). Then select issues to download, carefully, because any one of them can stall, and once a download stalls, it will be siting there spinning and smirking at you every time you open the app. Once you've got an issue to read, leave well alone and read what you have, for there is no guarantee that you can add another issue without a complete reset. This is completely unlike any other digital magazine, where carrying around a digital library is expected. The downloads are too large or the server is too slow. The same issue can clock in at 68 pages or 144 pages depending how you catch it, and I suspect the coding is inefficient, because it takes many minutes to download on a fast connection. (Hello, Kindle?) Once again, a great mag, but they should fire the app developer. Update.... MONTHS LATER.... It still mysteriously fails to download some issues. If the app crashes and closes immediately after you select an issue for download, you'll NEVER get that issue, even if others download OK. Go to settings, and select "delete issue data", then log in and try again to get your missing issue. You can expect to become frustrated. Is the app developer still alive, or has the mob got him yet? Don't ask me what I think of you: you won't get the answer that you wanted to..... Until you fix the bugs! (Yet another invite to rate the app!)

TAS deserves a better app than this

The American Spectator is a great magazine but the app won't work on my iPad. Like some other reviewers, I bought a three month subscription, but the app stalls (or crashes altogether) when I try to download the editions.

Does not work

The American Spectator app is inoperative. It will not download any issues. I am surprised that Apple would permit such an app to be made available for the iPad. I purchased a renewable 3- month subscription, and now have to figure out how to cancel the thing.

terrible waste of money

works great on my iphone 5. but on my ipad it just sits in download mode forever and might download and if it does it wont open.

Don't do it.

Don't buy it. I bought the three month subscription and it has yet to ever download. It locks up. I have sent an email to them and have gotten no response. Not how sure I will get my money back, but at least I can save others from loosing theirs.
