The Buffalo News is the primary newspaper of the Buffalo, New York, metropolitan area and its surrounding suburbs. It is wholly owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

The News was founded in 1873 by Edward H. Butler as a Sunday paper. In 1880, the News began publishing daily editions as well, and in 1914, became an inversion of its original existence by publishing Monday through Saturday only, with no publication on Sunday. During most of its life, the News was known as The Buffalo Evening News, and a gentlemen's agreement between the Evening News and the Buffalo Courier-Express meant that the Evening News would be just that, while the Courier-Express would be a morning-only paper. Until 1977 the News did not publish on Sundays, per gentleman's agreement with the Courier and its weekend edition was on Saturday evening.

In 1977, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway purchased the Evening News, and began publishing Saturday and Sunday Morning. The Courier-Express published its last issue on September 19, 1982 after a period of financial trauma, although at least part of its troubles are attributable to internal union strife within the Buffalo Newspaper Guild. That same year, the Evening News changed its name to The Buffalo News and began publishing morning and evening editions. Evening editions ceased in 2006. The News remains Buffalo's only daily newspaper, and probably forecast a trend whereby most American cities currently have only one daily newspaper.

The News participates in the Buffalo community and sponsors charitable, social, and educational events. The News also holds an annual Kids' Day newspaper sale in which civic groups sell the morning edition of the newspaper for double the usual price, with all proceeds directed to Buffalo's Children's Hospital.

Good content, bad app

Too many extra clicks to get articles. Often says "To see full article, click here." Headlines are written for print publication, not the app. Headlines end with ... so you don't know what it says. Slow to load. Tech service does not respond from the "Contact Us".

Needs more attention

I really want to support BN going electronic, but it has a long way to go, technically and content-wise. The app occasionally crashes on opening. Less frequently than before last fix, but still happens at times. What I really find sad is the lack of updated articles. I want to read this everyday but mostly it's the same content as the day before with a handful of new articles. Some are not even articles, just place holders awaiting copy to be uploaded. Really BN? Do you think people would buy today's paper if 80+% was identical to yesterday's? I want a real eBN, not what you are offering. As an added note, you might consider offering ecoupons or other money saving deals in one section to increase revenue and expand the e-BN. It would be worth it. You need to move faster into the e-world. Can you really afford to drag your feet like this?

Amateur app

Poor layout, poor interface, and frequent crashing makes the previous primitive iphone only Buffalo News app look now like a star. The Buffalo News should fire this app developer and find a competent one.

App now works

I had recently had the same problems using this App as others noted, getting knocked out and continually asking me to log in. I sent a message to the Buffalo News and they responded immediately. Today they sent me an update: "We discovered this issue was linked to our blogs on the app. The blogs are hosted on a different system and were kicking off a separate log in. Our developers have been working on this issue and resolved it". Great customer service! The App now works great with no issues!
