In November of 2008, after eight years of Republican polices that led to a worldwide financial crisis and downbeaten minorities, voters went to the polls and elected Barack Obama – but in California they also elected to ban same-sex marriage. The passage of Prop 8 was a life-changing moment for me. Like so many Americans, I needed answers and I needed to take action. Over the next few weeks I created The New Civil Rights Movement, to provide those answers and galvanize a community of progressives to help advance civil rights for LGBT people. Since then, we’ve grown NCRM into one of the most powerful voices for progressives, the LGBT community, and other under-represented minorities in the country.
And there’s still so much work we’re going to do together.

- Key DifferentiatorSince November, 2008, just days after Prop 8 passed, The New Civil Rights Movement has covered many of the issues impacting the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community, from marriage equality to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” from politics in general to the rise of the radical Right. And in positive response to problems that directly harm our community, we created “The Great Nationwide Kiss-In,” and “Out October.” In short, we’ve become what we set out to be: “A journal of news and opinion on gay rights and marriage equality.” And, we believe, so much more. Our in-depth reporting on anti-gay bullying teen suicides motivated our readers — many of whom were personally affected by anti-gay bullying — to share their coming out stories in print. From local politics to international LGBTQ crises, we’ve worked hard to bring our readers important stories that affect the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community, and everyone interested in a better world that embraces full equality for all. Where others give you clips, quotes, and quips, The New Civil Rights Movement gives you context. Perhaps because of that approach, we’ve earned a good-sized audience of loyal, intelligent, challenging readers, and have become possibly the fastest-growing major LGBT-focused political site online. Today, The New Civil Rights Movement is a well-read and well-respected voice on politics and civil rights, offering breaking news well before the mainstream media, and insight and analysis you can find nowhere else. We go beyond the media’s cookie-cutter approach, and the blogosphere’s sensationalism, often interviewing those responsible for making the headlines, taking the time to give you the bigger picture. In short, where others give you clips, quotes, and quips, The New Civil Rights Movement gives you context. Perhaps because of that approach, we’ve earned a good-sized audience of loyal, intelligent, challenging readers, and have become possibly the fastest-growing major LGBT-focused political site online. We’re even indexed as a news source by Google News — something few blogs can boast! From Politico to The Washington Post to The Washington Examiner, The New Civil Rights Movementhas been quoted internationally by many icons, like ThinkProgress and Pam’s House Blend on the left, as well as Little Green Footballs and — for better or worse! – Maggie Gallagher at The National Review, on the right. Our work has been linked to by almost every well-known progressive blog and news source, from The Raw Story to Rachel Maddow, from The Village Voice to The Advocate, and from DailyKos to TheHuffington Post. (We can even count among our fans Ashton Kutcher and Ms. Magazine!) We’ve been publicly labeled “Best Opinion” by The Week, and recognized as “one of the smartest sites on the web” by the editor in chief of 365Gay.com, “thoughtful, probing,” by Mediaite, and “very smart” by Joe.My.God. If you want a good return on your advertising investment, in a respected, intelligent, credible, LGBT-focused environment where content is king, look no further — but visit our advertising partner, Blogads, for rates, impression information, and to see our very low CPM!
