The Harris County - Houston Sports Authority is a political subdivision of the City of Houston, Harris County, and the State of Texas, created for the purposes set forth in the Concurrent Order and the Act, including planning, acquiring, establishing, developing, constructing or renovating of one or more sports and community venue projects and related infrastructure.
Houston Sports completed its initial project on Opening Day for the downtown baseball park, Minute Maid Park, on March 30, 2000, on time and under budget.
The authority began its second project with the groundbreaking for the new Reliant Stadium in March 2000, and the stadium was officially opened on August 24, 2002.
The third project, the downtown Toyota Center and Tundra Garage, broke ground on July 31, 2001, and opened its doors on October 6, 2003.
BBVA Compass Stadium recently completed HoustonÍs professional stadium landscape and was the first soccer specific stadium to be built in a downtown area. The stadium broke ground on February 5, 2011 and opened its doors on May 12, 2012.
