Mental Health Partners (MHP), a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, was founded in 1962 as the Mental Health Center of Boulder County and opened at the county general hospital on North Broadway in Boulder. The new clinic was formed through the collective efforts of a group of dedicated citizens and employed a psychiatrist and social worker part-time, who provided services for adult and child clients, as well as an after-care program for clients discharged from mental hospitals.
Over the past 52 years, Mental Health Partners has grown rapidly from its grass-roots beginning. By 1965, the organization had a full-time director who was a psychiatrist, two psychologists, five social workers, one receptionist, and one bookkeeper, as well as a 24-hour emergency answering service. Federally designated as a comprehensive community mental health center in 1971, MHP expanded its service locations to include Longmont in 1972 and Broomfield in 1987. Since then, MHP has continued to keep pace with growth and demand. It is considered a leader and innovator in mental health, and it is the only organization providing comprehensive mental health services to residents of Boulder and Broomfield counties regardless of ability to pay.
Currently, the organization serves over 18,000 individuals and responds to nearly 13,000 calls to emergency psychiatric services annually. MHP employs over 400 administrative and mental health professionals„including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and peer support specialists. The organization delivers over 30 distinct programs through 12 service locations across Boulder and Broomfield counties, and engages more than 100 community partners including schools, healthcare clinics, nonprofits, local agencies, and businesses.
