Description:

The Pillars of the Earth for iPad offers a new reading experience, as Ken Follett’s beloved epic story leaps from the page to the screen in a multimedia adventure. This amplified edition of Ken Follett’s international bestselling novel The Pillars of the Earth showcases beautiful video, art and music from the Starz Originals 8-part epic television event based on the book, as well as exclusive videos with the author about his research and the process of bringing his books to the screen, and an innovative Character Tree that prevents plot spoilers. Produced in partnership with Starz in anticipation of the original television series based on the novel, the The Pillars of the Earth for iPad invites you to immerse yourself in a medieval world charged with ambition, desire, and lust.
Unique and exclusive features include:
• An interactive Character Tree, housed in a virtual stained glass window, grows as characters are introduced in the book, allowing the reader to learn more about the selected characters and their corresponding relationships. As the story progresses, the stained glass window becomes more intricate and reveals more and more about the characters.
• Contextual video footage and still images are carefully blended into the eBook from the corresponding section of the Starz series, so readers can choose to watch beautiful clips of cathedrals, horses and men in shining armor inside the eBook. Or if they prefer, they can watch the clips as well as longer scenes in another section of the app.
• Ken Follett’s multimedia diary, which is the author’s on-set impressions of the process of bringing The Pillars of the Earth from page to screen.
• Behind-the-scenes insights into the making of the event series, looking at how the filmmakers captured Follett’s vision and created the medieval world of The Pillars of the Earth, including interviews with the actors, director and producers.
• A Listening Lounge features music – including hymns, soundtrack themes, and battlefield scene scores – from the miniseries.
• A sneak preview of Ken Follett’s follow-up book.

NOTE:
• If a video does not appear, or is taking a long time to load, tap on the upper right corner of the screen to zoom and refocus.

Fool me once ...

Never again will I buy an "amplified" electronic book. As was elsewhere stated, this is primarily an advertisement for the STARZ program. The main difference between these (very limited) trailers and trailers found elsewhere on the internet is that I paid $13 dollars for the advertisement. The App does not compare well with the basic and advanced features provided by "non-amplified" ebook readers. Also, I have suspicions that this App drains my iPad battery faster than does an ebook reader. Can this be? Finally, if all of my ebooks required this much memory, my disk memory would soon be depleted. Enough words wasted on this application. I was duped by the hype through no fault but my own. Dear prospective buyer ... think twice. A fool and his money are soon parted.

Flawed

This app is a great idea for what an ebook should be, but unfortunately, it does not work as it should. In my case, the videos embedded in the book do not load. Another complaint is that every time I sync my Ipad with the computer it takes forever and before installing this app that never happened. The character map is a great idea, but be careful not to read below their picture as a summary of their role is unveiled thus ruining the story. I hope they fix all this bugs and mistakes, only then it will be one of the greatest apps/ideas for the Ipad.

Not ready for prime time

It's a great idea but it simply does not work. The app crashes every 5 seconds. I can't even read the book part forget about the multimedia. They have updated the program once - excruciating long to download all 1.6 gb again to have it crash even more than before. I want my money back. ***** update for 1.0.2 Now it appears to finally work.

Many videos not functional/ no app support

I downloaded this app today, after having some fixes. The app loads with a plea that if there are any crashes to notify the developer so they can improve the performance. However, there is no link internally in the application to support, nor are there valid links on this page to let them know of "beam to black" videos. I am interested in following trends in publishing and think this shows great promise, but it currently is not as functional as I'm sure Ken Follett would like it to be.

Great Book and series very poor app

The content is very limited and is never updated. Maybe the app will be updated before the end of the 8 week series but I doubt it. Waste of money. They are fortunate that the App S tore doesn't accept returns.
