The Coils are made of a shape-memory material called Nitinol, which are then inserted into the diseased parts of the lung during a bronchoscopy procedure. When in place, the Coils are designed to gently regain their shape, gathering up loose, inelastic lung tissue and holding open surrounding airways. The Coils are not a new option for patients with severe emphysema; thousands of patients have been treated in Europe since 2008 and a growing number of countries currently offer the procedure.

The Coils are not approved for commercial sale in the United States and are restricted by law to investigational use only in the U.S.
