In 1998, Niagara Chocolates acquired Oak Leaf Confections located in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. The Oak Leaf Confections facility is 148,000 sq. ft. and employs approximately 240 full-time people. Oak Leaf Confections manufactures ball gum, tablet gum, pressed dextrose candy and jawbreakers. In 2002, Niagara Chocolates acquired some unique brands and distinctive processing capabilities that effectively reach the national markets. Thus, SweetWorks, Inc. was established as the parent company. The nationally recognized brands acquired include the nostalgic candy coated chocolate Sixlets¬ and the dark chocolate covered sticks Ovation¬. SweetWorks is a mid-sized company that is recognized by its consumers and customers as a leader among premium chocolate producers. Early in 2014, Chocolat Frey AG, the number one company in the Swiss chocolate market acquired the majority of the stock of SweetWorks¬. SweetWorks¬ continues to operate as an independent group of companies headquartered in Buffalo, NY.
