Fairtrade Australia & New Zealand
Fairtrade Australia & New Zealand (Fairtrade ANZ) is an independent certification body which licenses the use of the FAIRTRADE Mark on products which meet international Fairtrade standards. This independent consumer label is now recognised by 50% of Australian consumers and 72% of New Zealand consumers. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade aims to address the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. Today, more than six million farmers, producers, workers and their families across 70 developing countries benefit from the international Fairtrade system. Worldwide, shoppers spent ó4.8 billion on Fairtrade products in 2012, and an estimated ó80 million was paid in Fairtrade Premium to producers in the Fairtrade system. In Australia and New Zealand, retail sales of Fairtrade Certified Products in 2013 were just under AU$200 million, which generated AU$3.5 million in Fairtrade Premium, which will be used for community and infrastructure building projects. Fairtrade ANZ was founded by international development NGOs in 2005 to support farmers and workers in developing countries to improve their lives and communities through better longer-term trading relationships. We are the AU/NZ member of Fairtrade International. www.fairtrade.com.au | www.fairtrade.org.nz
