Description
International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs. Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide.
International Medical Corps created its Global Security Department in 2006 to proactively manage the safety and security of its staff worldwide. The department has an extensive network of Security Focal Points at each individual site and is currently comprised of security professionals at the country, regional, and global levels. The mission of the department is to work within programs to identify safety and security vulnerabilities; strengthen the capacity of programming to safely implement planned activities; and provide technical assistance to the field sites and headquarters in times of emergency or crisis. A key component to International Medical Corps’ internal Security Management, is safety and security incident management.
In addition to responding directly to safety and security incidents occurring in the field, International Medical Corps’ Security Department also maintains an internal database of all reported incidents. While the existing system is able to maintain basic functionality of warehousing security incidents it does not have the capacity and functionality needed to serve as a comprehensive security analysis and management tool.
In 2014, International Medical Corps designed and developed a proprietary Incident Management System to replace the existing system. The new incident management system will streamline an otherwise antiquated management system, increase capability and functionality, provide staff with more and faster access to information, and greatly reduce time spent on managing this important aspect of our security framework. The new system has two vehicles of gathering data, a web-based platform as well as a smartphone application.
