The Missouri History Museum's Historic St. Louis App invites you to step back in time and re-discover the city through historical photography from MHM's Photograph and Prints Collection.

Historic St. Louis opens a window onto the past. App users can:

• Pinpoint the location of images dating back to the city's earliest photographs (the 1850s).
• Use the GPS enabled map to easily navigate to the same spot where the photographer once stood.
• Enable the image overlay, placing the historical image over the phone's camera view—providing a compelling "then and now" vantage point.
• Share images with friends and family through email, Twitter, and Facebook.

The Missouri History Museum's Photographs and Prints collection documents the physical growth of St. Louis and surrounding communities, prominent citizens, industries and institutions, important community events, and the everyday life of the region's diverse inhabitants.

Improvements needed

The app keeps crashing on my iPhone 5s or freezing, but when it doesn't, it works pretty nicely. It looks like it was designed in 2008 and is not optimized for iPhone 5 or 6/6 plus. But the pictures are good quality. I would love to see more content added in the future.

Great app!

It's good to see many pictures from the museum (St. Louis car manufacturers along Olive), and many only first seen here. Thank you, Missouri History Museum and your development team!

I can see my house from here!

Well, not actually...yet. They've barely scratched the surface but this is already awesome. If they continue to add more photos and information this will be worth hours of exploration. Love seeing St Louis in a new (actually old) light. Keep it up!

Fascinating for any St. Louisan

This is an unbelievable app - great job history museum! If you have any interest in STL, urban history, genealogy, you will probably find yourself lost in this app like me! So far it works with no bugs, and is well organized. The only problem is when you try and map a photo, it sends you to the map app w the latitude/longitude and the photo caption...you have to remove the photo caption. Well done!

Awesome how they mapped the location of the photos. It really gives you an idea how certain streets looked back in the day.

Core Location Framework
