In the Bay Area, research shows that students from low-income communities aren't exposed to the math and science training, or tech mentors that lead to job opportunities in the field. Without this access, these students are underprepared for careers in science and technology. Founded in 2012, Hack the Hood addresses digital equity by training low-income kids to build websites for local small businesses, actively supporting them to launch their own tech careers and further their education. We will be scaling our work with community-based organizations with a strong reputation for providing culturally-competent youth development services, as well as sufficient capacity to run the program and develop the local partnerships necessary to operate and sustain our model.
Founded in 2012, Hack the Hood is a non-profit project of The Center for Media Change, a 501c3. In 2012 we launched in Oakland, and we are now expanding around the Bay area.
We are a winner of the 2014 Google Bay Area Impact Challenge .
Our Vision
Hack the Hood's vision is to increase the number of women and people of color in tech jobs by teaching web development and tech marketing skills to youth, and then supporting them in further training, mentoring, and internships. Our youth create web sites and directory listings for small local businesses, helping to empower them online. We want to be THE entry-level program to funnel youth of color into tech careers and further training.
Get involved! We are seeking mentors, volunteers and supporters.
