KE (formerly Karachi Electric Supply Company) is the only vertically integrated power utility in Pakistan that generates, transmits and distributes electricity to industrial, commercial, agricultural and residential consumers of Karachi (and its outskirts), a metropolis of 20 million people - PakistanÍs largest city. KE was incorporated on September 13, 1913 and privatized in 2005. In May 2009, Abraaj Capital, a Dubai based leading private equity firm took over KE and with an unprecedented investment of over USD 1 Billion the power utility witnessed a turnaround. For the fiscal year 2014-15 with revenues of Rs. 190 Billion KE stands as the 2nd largest private entity in Pakistan and the 3rd largest company with a total assets base of Rs. 273 Billion. It was after 17 years that the company posted a profit of PKR 2.6 billion in the last fiscal year 2011-12. KE is one of the countyÍs largest employers: with a workforce of around 11,000 employees. It is one of the only 12 companies in PakistanÍs industrial sector that have been included in the esteemed list of ïApproved, Training Employer'_ by the ICAEW and is also the recipient of the Gold Employer Status by the ACCA. KE secured a level ïAÍ rating from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) for its Integrated Sustainability Report for the year 2012. This makes K-Electric the first power utility in Pakistan to achieve the level ïAÍ rating for an integrated report.
